About the Author

Jerry Maxwell was a native Tennessean who grew up in Detroit, Michigan and lived in Commerce with his wife, Carlene. He received his undergraduate degree in History and English from Adrian College and his masters degree in History from Eastern Michigan University.

Jerry spent 32 years teaching Civil War, Old West, World War II, and Advanced Placement US History classes at North Farmington High School in Farmington, Michigan. Jerry received several awards during his long career, most notably the DAR State of Michigan History Teacher of the Year and the DAR National History Teacher of the Year in 1995.

After retiring from teaching, Jerry became a field instructor for Michigan State University, supervising, evaluating, and enhancing the teaching skills of intern teachers at various Detroit area high schools.

Jerry has always been passionate about US History and the Civil War, and has been a historical lecturer to various groups since 1972. Some of his lectures have included Abraham Lincoln's life and assassination, Jeb Stuart's raids, and Six Heroes at Shiloh. He has also been an active member of the Michigan Regimental Civil War Round Table since 1972, holding the post of president three times. For the past 25 years, he acted as field trip coordinator and monthly newsletter editor.

When not focused on his work, Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports, and golfing. While he supports all Michigan sporting teams, he was a fan of the Spartans, especially Coach Izzo's team, and an avid Detroit Tigers fan.

Jerry passed away on October 29, 2011.  He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend; an inspiring and passionate historian and teacher.  He will be greatly missed and remembered by all who were touched by him.
